My Heart Races and I'm Not in Love

Question: Why does my heart race all the time? Sometimes, it prevents me from sleeping because I can hear it pounding in my head.

Things to Consider: The first thing that you need to do is to go to your doctor and have yourself checked. If the usual suspects are not suspected, your doctor will also draw some blood to see if your hemoglobin and other levels are within normal limits.

If your doctor determines that your iron levels are low, he/she will recommend or prescribe iron for you. Both men and women need iron, though women need more than men. Menstruating women need more than non-menstruating, as well.

Some people have problems with iron pills because it tends to make them constipated. Ask your doctor about food-based iron supplements, as they tend to be milder on the digestive system.

You could also ask about consuming beets, lots of dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, and dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots, which are all good sources of iron. If you are a meat-eater, liver is good.

Once you start consistently consuming more iron-rich foods, check with your doctor to make sure that you are within normal limits.

Bear in mind that iron is better absorbed with vitamin C, so make sure to consume a good source of vitamin C. Be careful with grapefruit if you are on certain medications for cholesterol.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

"Thank you for introducing me to those herbs and for helping me to understand what I was doing to my body with all that sugar. My sugar levels are finally down and my family doctor is so pleased. Your class made so much sense; I felt like I was listening to you on the radio!"
